Repair, Replace, or Fix the Drainage?

Not every gutter problem calls for a new system. What we find on the roofline decides the recommendation, and if a repair will hold, that is what we will tell you.

Often a repair

The System Is Mostly Sound

  • One corner or end cap is leaking
  • A few hangers have loosened on an otherwise straight run
  • A single section is damaged and the rest is in good shape
Gutter repair options →
Usually a replacement

Problems Run Along the Roofline

  • Sagging or pulling away in several places
  • Leaks at many joints of an older sectional system
  • Rust, dents, or damage along much of the run
  • Gutters past about 20 years old that keep needing fixes
About gutter replacement →
Often a drainage fix

Clean Gutters Still Overflow

  • Water spills over the edge in heavy rain even after cleaning
  • One downspout is draining too much roof
  • Water collects against the foundation below a downspout
Downspouts and outlets →

A Full Gutter Replacement on a Gresham Home

This single-story home has a garage joined to the main house and mature trees around the lot. The written scope called for taking down the entire existing gutter system and replacing it with a larger white seamless system.

What the scope specified

Removed
About 196 feet of existing gutter, hauled away
Gutters
6-inch seamless K-style aluminum, white, up to .032 gauge
Downspouts
New 3×4 downspouts, white, with cleanouts added
Connections
Five outlets, five mitres, and four end caps
Mounting
Heavy-duty hidden hangers with stainless steel screws
Finish
Leveled and pitched, water-tested, final walkthrough and cleanup
Warranty
Lifetime material warranty

Why the outlet count matters

Five outlets on about 196 feet of gutter give the roof’s water five places to leave the system, and the 3×4 downspouts give each outlet more room to drain. Each mitre, outlet, and end cap is a connection, so each one is sealed and then checked when water runs through the finished system.

Why cleanouts were added

Trees surround this lot, so needles and leaves can reach the downspouts. A cleanout gives the homeowner a place to clear a clog without taking the downspout apart.

Have a Roofline That Needs a Plan?

Text us photos of the overflow, sagging, or damaged sections, or request an estimate online. We will measure the home and put the recommended gutter size, outlet layout, and downspout plan in writing.

Planning the System

What Decides Your Gutter Size and Layout

Gutter size, outlet count, and downspout size are chosen together. A bigger gutter with too few outlets can still overflow. These are the conditions we measure, and how each one can change what goes on your home.

  • Roof area feeding each run

    What we check
How much roof drains to each eave, including upper roofs that shed onto lower ones.
    How it changes the plan
More roof on one run points toward 6-inch gutter, more outlets, or both.
  • Pitch and valleys

    What we check
Steep roof planes and valleys that send water to one spot quickly.
    How it changes the plan
Concentrated water can call for extra gutter capacity and careful outlet placement.
  • Run length and outlet locations

    What we check
Where a downspout can realistically go around doors, walkways, decks, and planting beds.
    How it changes the plan
A long run with few possible outlet spots may need more capacity in the gutter and downspouts.
  • Fascia and rafter tails

    What we check
Whether the wood behind the gutter is solid enough to hold new hangers.
    How it changes the plan
Soft fascia is replaced before new gutter covers it, and we show you what we found first.
  • Where the water goes

    What we check
The ground at the bottom of each downspout and the path water takes from there.
    How it changes the plan
Downspouts are placed and routed so water moves away from the foundation. See where downspouts should drain.
  • Trees and roof debris

    What we check
Needles, leaves, and cones collecting on the roof and in the old gutters.
    How it changes the plan
Cleanouts make downspouts easier to clear, and guards are worth discussing when debris is heavy.

5-inch K-style

The common residential size. It suits many homes, garages, and outbuildings with moderate roof areas.

Often paired with 2×3 downspouts

6-inch K-style

More room for water from larger roof areas, steep pitches, long runs, and valleys. It is the size specified for the Gresham replacement above.

Often paired with 3×4 downspouts

More detail: when 6-inch K-style gutters make sense.

Your Written Estimate

What It Covers and What It Costs

The owner measures the home and writes the estimate. You get a flat-rate written price for the scope you approve, not a range.

Your estimate spells out

  • Gutter size, color, and footage for the runs being installed
  • Downspout size and footage, plus any cleanouts
  • Removal and haul-away of the old system, when it is coming down
  • Roof-edge work such as fascia replacement, drip edge, or flashing, only where the roof edge needs it
  • Gutter guards, only if you want them and the debris calls for them
  • One flat-rate total for the job as written

Install Day

How the Crew Installs Your New Gutters

These steps follow our crew’s installation checklist.

  1. Confirm the scope

The crew goes over the written plan with you before anything comes down.

  2. Remove the old system

Old gutters and downspouts come off the house and leave with us.

  3. Check the roof edge

We inspect the fascia and rafter tails. If the wood is soft, you see it and hear the recommended fix before new gutter covers it.

  4. Form and hang the gutters

Runs are formed to length on site and hung on hidden hangers, spaced about every 2 feet on 6-inch gutter and about every 3 feet on 5-inch. Mitres, outlets, and end caps are sealed.

  5. Set the pitch and downspouts

Each run slopes toward its outlets. Downspouts are strapped to the wall and set to discharge water away from the foundation.

  6. Water-test the system

We run a hose through the gutters and mitres to check the flow and look for leaks or standing water.

  7. Clean up and walk through

Scraps and old material are collected, the work area is swept with a magnet for stray screws, and we walk the finished system with you.

How long it takes

Many straightforward residential installations are finished in one working day. Larger rooflines, more than one structure, difficult access, or fascia repair can add time, and your estimate will say so.

Warranty

Workmanship warranty coverage is available under our written terms. The Gresham replacement above also listed a lifetime material warranty in its scope. Ask which coverage applies to your installation before you approve the estimate.

Trees Near the Roof

Cleanouts, Guards, and Upkeep

If trees hang over or near the roof, plan for debris when the new system goes in. On open lots, guards often are not worth the cost, so we recommend them only when the debris calls for them.

Downspout Cleanouts

$75 each

An access point near the bottom of the downspout for clearing needles and leaves without taking the downspout apart.

Easy Lock Guards

$6.00/LF

Non-mesh protection for leaves and larger debris, on properties without heavy fine-needle drop.

LeafBlaster Pro Guards

$10.00/LF

Stainless-steel micro-mesh for fir, cedar, and pine needles and heavily wooded lots.

Compare gutter guard options →

Guards reduce what gets into the gutter, but debris can still collect on top. Plan on occasional checks either way.

Common Questions

Gresham Gutter Installation Questions

Do you have an office in Gresham?

No. American Gutter Service is based in St. Helens, and Gresham is part of the Portland-metro area we travel to for estimates and installations. Call or text (503) 308-1174, or request a free estimate online, to check scheduling for your address.

How much does gutter installation cost in Gresham?

Our published prices are $7.75 per linear foot for white 5-inch seamless gutter and $8.75 per linear foot for white 6-inch. Downspouts are $6.50 per foot for 2×3 and $7.00 per foot for 3×4, and the minimum installation project is $450. Footage, removal, cleanouts, color, access, and any fascia or flashing work set the total, which appears in your written estimate.

Should I get 5-inch or 6-inch gutters?

It depends on how much roof drains to each run, the pitch, valleys, run length, and how many outlets the run can have. 5-inch K-style suits many homes and is often paired with 2×3 downspouts. 6-inch adds capacity for larger roof areas, steep pitches, long runs, and valleys, and is often paired with 3×4 downspouts. We measure before recommending either.

Can you replace only the damaged part of my gutters?

Sometimes. If most of the system is sound, a repair or a section replacement is usually the better value. If sagging, leaks, or damage run along much of the roofline, a full replacement usually costs less over time than repeated fixes. We tell you which we recommend after looking at the roofline.

Are seamless gutters completely seam-free?

No. Seamless gutters are formed in continuous lengths, so straight runs have no joints. Mitres at corners, outlets, and end caps are still connections, and each one is sealed and then checked during the water test.

How long does installation take?

Many straightforward residential installations are finished in one working day. Larger rooflines, more than one structure, difficult access, or fascia repair can add time, and your estimate will say so.

What warranty comes with new gutters?

Workmanship warranty coverage is available under our written terms. The Gresham replacement described on this page also included a lifetime material warranty in its written scope. Ask which coverage applies to your installation before you approve the estimate.

Do I need gutter guards?

Not always. Guards help most on lots with heavy tree cover, especially fir, cedar, or pine needles. They reduce the debris entering the gutter, but debris can still collect on top, so occasional checks are still needed. On open lots, cleanouts and routine cleaning may be enough.
