5-inch or 6-inch Gutters?

We size each home by roof area, pitch, valleys, tree cover and where outlets can go.

5-inch gutters

  • Smaller, simpler roofs
  • Usually 2x3 downspouts
  • Hangers about every 3 ft on our jobs

6-inch gutters

  • Large or steep roofs, two stories, valleys, heavy tree cover
  • Usually 3x4 downspouts
  • Hangers about every 2 ft on our jobs

A 3x4 downspout has twice the opening of a 2x3: 12 square inches against 6, nominal. When 6-inch gutters make sense

Portland Gutter Questions

Do I need a permit for gutters in Portland?

Usually not. For one- and two-family homes, the City of Portland lists installing gutters and downspouts as work that needs no building permit. A plumbing permit may still apply to stormwater disposal, such as a drywell or rain drain. See the City list.

How long does gutter installation take?

Most homes take about a day. Your written estimate covers the work on your house, and we confirm the date before we start.

Do you remove the old gutters?

Yes. We take the old gutters down and haul them away. Removal is listed on your written estimate.

Can you install gutters on older homes, garages and ADUs?

Yes. On older homes we check the fascia and rafter tails first, because new gutters need solid wood. Garages, ADUs and shops can go on the same estimate as the house.

Are seamless gutters better than sectional gutters?

Seamless gutters have joints only at corners and outlets, so long runs have fewer places to leak. Compare pre-cut and seamless.

Are estimates free in Portland?

Yes. Estimates are free and in writing anywhere we serve in the Portland metro.
