Roof-edge basics

What Fascia Is, and Why Gutters Depend on It

Fascia is the board along the roof edge, fastened to the rafter ends. Gutter hangers screw into it.

A gutter full of water is heavy, and soft wood can't hold a screw under that load. That's why gutters on rotted fascia sag and pull away.

During gutter work

When We Find Rot Behind Your Gutters

Rot often isn't visible until the old gutter comes off.The gutter hides the face of the board.

  1. We stop and show you

    In person or with photos.

  2. We measure the bad run

Only the damaged length gets replaced.

  3. You get a price before we continue

$10 per foot, $250 minimum, in writing.

  4. New board first, then the gutter

Gutters only go on wood that will hold them.

The work itself

How Fascia Replacement Is Done

  1. Take down the gutter on that run

It's fastened to the fascia, so it comes off first.

  2. Cut out the damaged board

Back to sound wood on both ends.

  3. Check what's behind it

Rafter tails and roof edge. If damage goes deeper, we show you before going on.

  4. Fasten the new fascia board

Matched to the existing board and fixed to the rafter tails.

  5. Paint, if you want it done

$5 per foot. You supply the paint.

  6. Hang the gutter

The existing gutter goes back up, or a new one is installed.

Fix the cause too

Why Fascia Rots in the First Place

New wood rots too if water keeps reaching it.

Water getting behind the gutter

Roof water running down the board means the roof edge needs attention. See gutter flashing and drip edge.

Gutters that overflow or hold water

Usually a slope, hanger or outlet problem. See gutter repair.

Leaks at the back of old gutters

Failed seams drip onto the fascia for years before anyone notices.

Fascia Replacement Questions

Can you replace only the rotted section?

Yes. Sound board is left alone. The $250 minimum applies to small sections.

How can I tell if my fascia is rotted without climbing a ladder?

Look for gutters pulling away, peeling paint on the board and dark streaks below the gutter. Then text us a photo.

Can new gutters go on my old fascia?

If the wood is solid, yes. We check it before hanging anything.
